Abstract:This article is based on a survey the author conducted in 1967 among students of the University of East Africa. To some 200 students at Nairobi and Makerere (political conditions in Dar-es-Salaam made the study impossible there) a questionnaire was distributed. Response rate: 75.6%; final sample: 155, 130 of them Africans and 25 Asians. The responses reveal a very high level of racism among African students; Africans are much more hostile to Asians than Asians to Africans; Africans are more hostile to Europeans than are Asians; Asians are more critical of themselves than are Africans; Asians and Africans agree in attributing to Europeans managerial and technical skills; over half of both Asians and Africans also agree in accusing Europeans for their arrogance, racism and discrimination; Africans and Asians view themselves on the positive side although Asians agree with some of the African stereotypes of Asians; from these stereotypes emerge interesting conclusions; women were less prejudiced than men, but not significantly so.
