Abstract:President Nyerere's inspirational adress to the Royal African Society on 21 november 1975 (printed in African Affairs, april 1976), proposed a choice for the poor and the rich countries between dialogue and confrontation, The purpose of this note is to clear away some of the misconceptions which the President's speech contained (he used a number of striking examples of the apparent continuous deterioration in Tanzania's terms of trade over the last ten years; the cases quoted by him are unfortuhately incorrect or doubtful) and to make one or two suggestions for the agenda of the dialogue which might fruitful for international meetings and conferences.
