Abstract:The economic and social background of Borana warfare and raiding during the colonial period and up to the present is outlined. It is shown how herding, because it suits aggressive and irresponsible bachelors, fits culturally with warriorhood, and the contrasting roles of senior and junior age-sets, both in symbolic behaviour and in the context of everyday life, are described and illustrated. The final part of the paper is devoted to a description of the organisation of age-sets (Hariiya) within the gaada system of the Boran, and of the connection between the age-set membership and raiding.
