| Abstract: | There is a widespread belief, among some who hope for change in South Africa, that if only all blacks withdrew their labour, the whole structure of South Africa would collapse. The author examines the relationship between stay-aways and the black working class, in three parts: a brief history of stay-aways between 1950 and 1961; its re-emergence in Soweto; and the implications of the stay-away as a lactic of working-class action. In his view, the stay-aways are a demonstration and not an organised challenge. As a lactic, the stay-away is far too limited to be effective. App., graph, notes, tab., French sum. p. 10. |
