Abstract:A major weakness in the interpretation of African labour protest and worker consciousness has been the over-emphasis on data relating to strikes, unionisation and overt political militance. Aim of this paper is to discover and evaluate the silent, unorganised, covert responses of African workers. Sections: 1) The labour process and worker responses. 2) Workers' responses in Africa (desertion - community withdrawal or revolt - target working - task, efficiency and time bargaining - sabotage - creation of a 'work-culture' - accidents and sickness - drug use - theft). 3) Hidden and overt forms of class consciousness.
