| Abstract: | The ability of Rhodesia to survive economic sanctions was due maninly to the overwhelming support of the Smith regime by white Rhodesians. This support was the primary manifestation of a fundamental transformation in the Rhodesian political system between 1958 and 1965. White voters deserted the racially moderate establishment party and switched to the pro-white party. The author examines this transformation and its consequences for Rhodesia's political future, emphasizing the voter behavior of white Rhodesians. Herewith he has classified the white population in terms of eight social aggregates based on national identities, occupations, and levels of education. Sections of the study: The electoral shifts in 1962 and 1965 - Party shifts and the increasing salience of racial issues - The racial issue - Racial attitudes, social status, and party preference - Conclusion.
