Abstract: | Discussion of the role of Thomas Quiwonkpa, commanding general of the Armed Forces of Liberia, in the April 12, 1980, coup d'etat, his initial amicable relationship with Samuel Doe, head of State and chairman of the People's Redemption Council, his problems with the regime from 1983 onwards because of his insistence on the need to live up to the PRC's promise to return Liberia to constitutional democracy in 1985, and his November 12, 1985, coup attempt against the Doe regime. |
