| Abstract: | Sundkler distinguishes two main groups of African Independent Churches (in South Africa): the Ethiopian Churches and the Zionist Churches. A Rhodesian Independent Church, the Apostles, founded in 1932, shows the typical characteristics of Zionist churches in South Africa. Rhodesian Zionists differ in important respects from these Apostles and also from South African Zionists, because the outstanding charismata of the Apostles play only a minor role in their Church. Aim of this article is to confirm Sundkler's statement that some Zionist churches are moving away from their original emphasis on charismata and instead attribute greater importance to preaching within the framework of a well-developed liturgy which approximates more closely to that of Mission Churches. Suggested is that this change in forms of worship is due to a change in the social and economic background of Rhodesian Zionists who were at first labour migrants, but later became well-to-do farmers in their home areas.
