Abstract: | The problems of regional disparity in economic development are not peculiar to Nigeria alone. However, objective consideration of space for planning purposes calls for an inductive identification of a set of areas with similar characteristics. In Nigeria, some of the operational problems confronting the consideration of space, regarding regionalisation, and the general planning process include: an inadequate information delivery system: the grossness of comparable statistical areas; lack of standardisation of indices and areas for data collecting and reporting; and the lack of synchronisation of the socio-economic and cultural space. Because of their spatio-administrative structure, local government areas could be used to help alleviate some of these problems by being adopted as the official, standardised unit for data collection and reporting; for articulating experiential knowledge at the grassroots level; and for laying the foundation for the longrun synthesis of the socio-economic and cultural space of the country.
