Abstract:Sustainable development, first and foremost, implies human-centred development. Strategies and policies that are based on human-centred development empower people by improving their skills, building their self-reliance and enhancing their dignity. Increasingly, small, medium and micro-enterprises (SMMEs) are seen by policymakers worldwide as an ideal way to further sustainable development. This article evaluates the potential of the SMME sector to contribute to sustainable economic development in South Africa, through a focus on the North West Province. A short overview of the economic situation in this province is followed by an overview of its current SMME situation; the government's response to this situation is detailed, then a summary and critical evaluation are followed by an analysis of the five-year development strategy recently adopted for the province.
