| Abstract: | The second democratic elections since the end of military rule in Lesotho were held in May 1998.The election outcome was a landslide victory for the ruling Lesotho Congress for Democracy (LCD), which won 79 out of 80 constituencies. Although the election was declared free and fair, some political parties opposed its outcome and resorted to violent measures. The political crisis that followed climaxed with the military intervention by forces of the SADC. This paper gives an overview of the 1998 elections, paying attention to the registration of voters, constituency delimitation, voter education, the casting and counting of votes, the political parties and their election programmes, and the election results.
