Abstract: | This article examines the growing absorption of non-South African workers into the construction sector of South Africa. It focuses on the city of Johannesburg, which has been a magnet for all immigrant workers. Interviews were conducted with both employers and construction workers. The findings are presented in the following subsections: employer attitudes and the position of international migrants in the construction industry; the characteristics and profile of construction migrants; labour recruitment patterns; and the experience of construction workers from the perspective of both employers and construction workers themselves. One of the key findings is that foreign migrants (in particular from Mozambique) are a factor of consequence for the local construction industry. The article ends with five sets of policy implications that flow from the findings. Ref. |
