Abstract:Value to clients of the construction industry is reflected in three distinct but related aspects of a building project: cost, time and quality. Controlling project time performance has attracted priority attention in recent years. This paper summarizes the techniques or approaches to forecasting the time performance of projects. It then investigates the use of such techniques within quantity surveying practices in South Africa, identifying shortcomings in skills, knowledge and data. The study is based on the results of a survey of the largest 100 practices in South Africa. It shows that quantity surveying practices recognize the need to acquire expertise in estimating construction time. Therefore, the course curricula for quantity surveying should incorporate key aspects of the construction process and the related impact on construction time. Such curricula should cover construction planning and programming. Bibliogr.
