Abstract: | This article is the text of the Gandhi Memorial Lecture, delivered on 29 November 1999. The author is rector and vice-chancellor of the Cape Technicom and former chairperson of the Gandhi-Luthuli Peace Institute in Durban, South Africa. The speech assesses Mahatma Gandhi's relevance for today's South Africa. Recalling the four essential principles of Gandhian philosophy at a public level: truth, ahimsa (i.e. non-violence), trusteeship and constructive action, and the four principles at a personal level, the speaker stresses the inevitability of change and the role of humanity therein. |
