Abstract:A re-reading of Julius Nyerere's major essays and hindsight reflection on the first twenty-five years of Tanzanian independence under his leadership suggest that his central domestic preoccupations during the period of his Presidency (1961-1985) were fourfold: 1) promoting the development of the Tanzanian economy; 2) securing and retaining national control of the direction of Tanzania's economic development; 3) creating political institutions that would be widely participatory and that would sustain the extraordinary sense of common purpose which in these early days united Tanzanians under his leadership; and 4) building a just society in Tanzania, free of severe income inequalities, in which all would share the benefits of development as it was accomplished.
