Abstract: | This article looks at the postapartheid economic integration efforts, in particular free trade initiatives, of the countries in southern Africa, notably through the Southern African Development Community (SADC), the Southern African Customs Union (SACU), and the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (Comesa). It deals with obstacles to and opportunities for free trade in the context of globalization, giving attention to the economic domination of South Africa, trends of trade in SADC and non-tariff trade barriers, lessons from market integration under SACU, and the role of the SADC trade protocol. Southern African countries would do better by concentrating their development efforts in areas where they have a competitive edge. SADC should prepare the region for global competition in trade and investment. If SADC does not move more quickly, international trade initiatives of the WTO will soon overshadow SADC programmes, rendering the organization redundant. Bibliogr., notes, sum. |
