Abstract: | This study focuses on the plight of refugee women from Sudan in the Kiryandongo Refugee Settlement in Masindi District in northwestern Uganda. The author, who worked as a refugee counsellor with the UNHCR in Uganda for 10 years, undertook the study in the settlement in 1995. Data are provided on the distribution of the settlement's population; education levels of women; gender roles and division of labour; involvement of women in Local Committees charged with matters of security at the grassroots level; suggestions for reduction of violence; food and nutrition; and women's participation in income-generating and other activities. Women refugees find their tasks overburdening due to lack of support mechanisms. Rape was found to be a big problem. Women lacked proper security measures. Unlike in their home country, food distribution is in the hands of men. There is also rampant malnutrition. Women lack skills to effectively participate in meaningful and profitable income-generating activities. Notes, ref. |
