Abstract:The objective of this article is to critically analyse the origin, development, and nature of the traditionally gendered roles in a heterosexual family unit in Uganda with a view to identifying specific issues that affect women in the sphere of marriage and family, in particular their role in domestic labour, and to design ways in which a positive change may be effected. The analysis involves the concepts of patriarchy, gender, equality, and the division of labour, in their socioeconomic and cultural contexts. The study of domestic labour offers insight into gender questions, power relations and human rights issues connected with gender roles. The condition of the heterosexual spousal setup in Uganda reflects the dominance of men in society, institutions and traditional practices which constitute a source of subordination for women. The article concludes that the problem of the exploitation and marginalization of the domestic labour performed by housewives and married women must be addressed from a multisectoral and multidisciplinary perspective.
