Abstract: | The dairy industry in Bechuanaland (Botswana) arose in the early 1930s primarily as an alternative to beef production in response to South Africa's restrictions on the import of cattle from the Protectorate. It lost its vigour once the weight restrictions on Bechuanaland cattle were removed in the 1940s. Because of its capital-intensive nature as well as its unproductiveness in terms of yield per beast, the dairy industry was always treated as secondary throughout the colonial period up to independence in 1966. The drought of the early 1960s sealed the fate of the dairy industry definitively. Notes, ref., sum. (This essay was written in 1982.) |
