Abstract:'Zar' is a large and widely distributed complex of indigenous spirit healing cults in Africa, concerned primarily with women's problems. The present bibliography lists 90 Arabic writings on 'zar', dating from the 1880s to the present, and ranging from religiously motivated texts to news reports, newspaper and women's magazines articles, interviews, poems, polemics and apologetics. An appendix lists a further 24 published and unpublished works on 'zar' written in other languages than Arabic which have appeared in Middle East publications or at Middle East universities or research institutions.
