Abstract: | This paper examines the environmental impact of the Nigerian Cement Company, Nkalagu (in Old Abakaliki Division, Nigeria), on the people who live and/or work in the vicinity of the company and its operational areas. Among those particularly affected is Umuhuali, the village group which hosts the factory site, part of the company's housing estate and the quarry area. Research results reveal that the airshed within the company operational areas is generally polluted, and the noise generated by the company's activities constitutes a serious hazard to nearby residents. Furthermore, important sources of drinking water, on which the communities depend, have been contaminated by industrial wastes emanating from the company. In spite of the values attached to land by Igboasa people, agricultural, residential and forest areas are lost and/or polluted as quarrying and cement production operations continue. Finally, positive socioeconomic impacts include employment opportunities. On the other hand, the company operations have resulted in the relocation of residents and distortion of the local economy.
