Abstract: | This paper presents a descriptive account of the development of Yorůbá palace poetry within the context of socioeconomic and political changes in Yorůbáland (Nigeria). It opens with a short description of palace singers and their production in traditional Yorůbá society. Following that, the paper discusses specific changes in the production of contemporary palace singers in relation to changes in traditional society, in particular the effects of intratribal wars, and British intervention in the Yoruba wars. The paper goes on to discuss factors that are responsible for those changes and the effects on the palace singers and their production (palace poetry). The paper concludes that Yorůbá palace poetry is a product of a changing society; hence the poetry itself is being re-composed by poets from time to time, in consonance with the dictates of society.
