Abstract:In a society where the value of an organization is weighed by its ability or inability to contribute meaningfully to economic development, and where revenue allocation is based on this consideration, museum professionals should not cling tenaciously to the traditional roles of museums. In this light, this paper looks at the economic potentials of museums in Nigeria and suggests ways in which such potentials can be exploited. Suggestions include the transformation of museums into centres of attraction which also offer visitors relaxation and entertainment opportunities; the provision of museums with craft stores where traditional crafts and clothes are marketed; the sale of videos of traditional Nigerian dances and books on cultural affairs. Because the statutory functions within the powers of the National Commission for Museums and Monuments do not cover the establishment of commercial enterprises, adequate recommendations should be made to amend sections of Decree No. 77 of 1979 to allow for partial commercialization of museum functions.
