Abstract:This article reviews some studies on traditional titles among the Igbo of southeastern Nigeria. Attention is paid to the history, development and significance of Igbo titles. During the precolonial period, traditional titles were highly respected due to the sacred and ritualistic influence that was inherent in them. There has never been any central authority in Igboland under which the titular system operated. The grades of titles varied from one town to another. Particular attention is paid to the 'ozo', the most significant Igbo title. Its origin and spread are discussed as well as rituals connected with 'ozo' initiation ceremonies, and the political significance of the 'ozo' title in Igboland. It is generally accepted that 'ozo' title holders provided leadership in Igbo society at the lineage, village and village-group levels. Bibliogr.
