Abstract: | Within the traditional context of the Yoruba of Nigeria, beads and royal beaded objects help to distinguish, in most cases, titled persons from non-titled persons. There is evidence of a bead making industry at Ife probably during the period AD 1000-1500. Beadcraft was practised extensively in most Yoruba towns and villages up to the middle of the 20th century. Today, the number of craft workers has decreased considerably. This paper examines materials used for beadcraft; processes involved in beadcraft; decorative motifs; and beaded objects, specifically crowns. Bibliogr. |
