Abstract:For students of 'ilm' (knowledge, science) in Nigeria there is no other 'tafsir' (Koranic exegesis) work apart from 'Tafsir al-Jalalayn'. To Nigerian 'mufassirun' (who interpret the meanings of the Koran for their students and the public in ceremonial gatherings) 'Tafsir al-Jalalayn' is both a textbook for students of 'ilm' and a manual for imparting the meanings of the Koran to the public. 'Tafsir al-Jalalayn' was co-authored by Jalal al-din Abd al-Rahinan al-Suyuti (849 AH-911 AH) and Jalal al-din Mahalli (died in 864 AH or AD 1459), two great jurists. This paper discusses the influence of 'Tafsir al-Jalalayn' on some notable Nigerian 'mufassirun' in the 20th century (Shaikh Abubakar Mahmud Gumi, Shaikh Ahmed Lemu, and Shaikh Adam Abd Allah al-Iluri), as well as presenting biographical information on the two authors of the 'Tafsir al-Jalalayn'.
