Abstract:This presidential address delivered delivered at the 41st Annual Conference of the Nigerian Geographical Association, Uyo, 31 May-4 June 1998, examines the role of transport in environmental deterioration and the policy measures required to mitigate this in the 21st century. Land use activities create spatial imbalance which leads to a gap between supply and demand. Movement is the means of correcting this. Spatial activities are impossible without transport. However, much as transport has created the human environment, it is also one of the worst defilers of the environment. The effect of transport - in the areas of atmospheric pollution, noise pollution and degrading aesthetics - on the health of people, community values and environmental ecology is deplorable. The need for policy-oriented research on the transport/environment relationship in Nigeria cannot be overstated. Bibliogr.
