Abstract: | This study identifies those topics in secondary school practical geography which students find difficult to understand, and which teachers find difficult to teach. Questionnaires were distributed to geography students and teachers at six secondary schools in Kaduna and Jigawa States of Northern Nigeria. The results lend credibility to the suggestion that students in Nigerian secondary schools find it difficult to deal with map reading and interpretation. Gender is not a contributory factor to this. Most student problems seem to be associated with teacher inability to effectively handle the confusing concepts. A good proportion of teachers are not professionally qualified and so may be lacking the pedagogical qualities expected of an effective teacher. More professional teacher preparation and greater use of teaching aids are recommended as strategies for coping with the situation. Bibliogr., sum. |
