| Abstract: | This bibliography of early Swahili history and society includes 700 items, 428 published before 1985 and 272 published after 1985, the year in which the author's book 'The Swahili: reconstructing the history and language of an African society, 800-1500' appeared. The focus of the bibliography is on the history and development of East African coastal societies over the past two millennia, but the author has included recent ethnography, linguistics, and history for comparative reasons. Not included are sources covering literature and the arts. The author has included mainly published work, but unpublished theses and papers are also included where available. The bibliography is subdivided by discipline - archaeology, linguistics and language, ethnography, and history. |
