| Abstract: | The present article points out some challenges for critical human security approaches to the analysis of the political economy of the southern African region. To this effect, it contextualizes critical approaches to security in International Relations (IR) and International Political Economy (IPE), points out the difference between new security and critical human security, and discusses some tensions between the two approaches. The article finally relates its critique to the developments surrounding the SADC's Organ on Politics, Defence and Security (OPDS), paying special attention to the OPDS's involvement in the DRC (Democratic Republic of Congo) crisis.
