Abstract:This paper argues that Somali refugees in Johannesburg (South Africa) face housing problems specific to their status as refugees and which are reflected in their housing conditions. The paper presents the results of a study of a Somali urban refugee community living in Johannesburg which was carried out in late 1999. The study looked at Somali refugee experiences at entry, economic survival, access to services including housing and education, as well as questions of identity and integration. The paper highlights the findings on the housing conditions of Somali refugees. These are based on interviews with 119 members of Johannesburg's Somali refugee community. The main housing problem appears to be one of affordability. The position of Somali refugees is made worse by xenophobia and hostility among some South Africans to non-South Africans. In conclusion, housing policy suggestions are made for improvement of the situation. Bibliogr.
