Abstract: | Leaderships of liberation movements and black trade unions in South Africa in the 1980s confronted scale questions, and in so doing, embraced specific spatio-temporal agendas, ways of coordinating action across places and different ways of imagining community. Major differences arose between the United Democratic Front (UDF) and the Federation of South African Trade Unions (FOSATU). This paper attempts to understand these differences as contested spatio-temporalities. Using the lens of the highly industrialized East Rand, the paper offers a critical account of important actors' (ANC, UDF and FOSATU) spatio-temporal imaginaries. It asks: What were the local geographical dynamics and rhythms of industrial and township resistance? How did various movements mediate the race-class-nation relation in spatial terms? How were various kinds of international relationships built and how were these internalized at the local level? Bibliogr. |
