Abstract:Adopting a case study approach, the author deals with three conflict situations and the lessons to be drawn from them: the Western Sahara conflict between Morocco and the Polisario (with UN involvement in conflict resolution), the thirty-year armed strife between North and South Sudan (which involved a number of mediators), and the emergence of the breakaway Somaliland following the overthrow of Siad Barre in January 1991 (where a traditional settlement mechanism was involved).
