Abstract: | This article provides a review of the historical development of international tourism in Kenya, with particular reference to recent trends and the problems of tourism development. These arise from a combination of external and internal constraints: the changing market environment and increasing competition, inadequate marketing of Kenya as a tourist destination, rising crime and insecurity, deteriorating infrastructure (electricity, roads, water supply), uncontrolled development, the impact of global economic recession, and complex land use patterns. The leading players in the industry, namely the Kenya Association of Hotel Keepers and Caterers, the Kenya Association of Tour Operators, the Mombasa Coast Tourist Association, the Kenya Wildlife Service, the Ministry of Tourism, and the Kenya Tourist Development Corporation must work together to meet the challenges faced by the industry in the 1990s.
