Abstract:	The chapters in this volume on Islam in Malawi are grouped into three sections. The first section, whose focus is broadly historical, examines the origins and development of Islam in the country and the agents who brought this development about (contributions by David S. Bone, Edward A. Alpers, and Fabiano Kwaule). The second section deals with three issues: the 'tariqa' or Muslim Brotherhoods (Alan Thorold), Muslim-Christian relations (David S. Bone), and Islamic education (Alfred J. Matiki). The third section comprises three texts which are important sources for the study of Islam, two by Christian missionaries writing in the early 20th century about the influence of Islam (A.L. Hofmeyr, 1910; William P. Johnson, 1911), and one by a leading member of Malawi's Asian community, Ibrahim A.G. Panjwani, who describes the history and status of the Muslim community up to 1979. The book concludes with an annotated bibliography on Islam in Malawi by David S. Bone.
