Abstract:Singing and dancing performances, called 'be' in the Baka language, are organized as a form of social gathering in each Baka village. The singing and dancing can be classified into two categories: informal and playful performances in which women and children participate, and formal and dramatic performances directed by men. Three types of performances - 'zaiko', 'kpalam', and 'jengi' - are described in detail, and Baka participatory behaviour and the social relationships embodied in these performances are analysed. The article is based on fieldwork conducted from November 1996 to March 1997, and from January to December 1999, in Ndimako village, in the Eastern Province of Cameroon.
