Abstract: | There is a consensus that rhythm is a fundamental aesthetic property of poetry. The available stylistic analyses of Swahili poetry generally fail to address the question of rhythm. Where attempts are made the description is both inaccurate and inadequate. This paper reinterprets and redefines the notion of stylistic analysis in general, and poetic rhythm in particular, insofar as these refer to Kiswahili verse. A rejoinder to Alice Nyambura Mwihaki's article by F.E.M.K. Senkoro is published in the same volume (p. 80-82). Bibliogr. |
