Abstract:Cheick Oumar Sissoko marks the coming of the 21st century with a film set at the beginning of time. He discovers insights into one of the most urgent problems facing Africa and indeed the world - fraticidal strife - by returning to its locus classicus, the story of Jacob and Esau. By translating this archetypal story into a distinctively West African context, Sissoko makes us see Africans not as exotic others but as representatives of a universal humanity. The film joins together a number of stories from Genesis chapters 24, 25, 34, 37 and 38 relating to the theme of brotherhood - including Esau selling his birthright to Jacob for a bowl of lentil soup, Isaac's marriage to Rebekah and the massacre of the Canaanites by the sons of Jacob. The complex narrative translates to film the characteristically West African technique of making a moral argument through a series of interconnected illustrative tales.
