Abstract: | Tirelo Setshaba is a one-year national study-service scheme in which 'O' level school leavers in Botswana are meant to participate. Completion of Tirelo Setshaba is a requirement for admission to tertiary education. On finishing Form 5, the majority of participants are sent to communities with which they have had no previous contact. They are placed in individual positions with a User Department, working amongst others as teachers, adult educators, library assistants, court clerks, or social welfare assistants. This article discusses the impact of the Tirelo Setshaba national service on the participants and its contribution to their personal growth, cultural sensitivity, language learning and educational development. Data derive from qualitative analysis of work diaries kept by a group of 100 Tirelo Setshaba participants in schools in late 1995 and statistical data analysis based on interviews and questionnaires conducted among the participants and officers in the Department of Tirelo Setshaba in April 1997.
