Abstract:Based on interviews with 180 persons aged 11-25 conducted between October 1999 and January 2000 in Abala community, Abia State, Nigeria, the author discusses first sexual encounters among adolescents in this Nigerian rural community, the level of utilization of safe sex methods and the fallouts of debut sexual relations and their implications for adolescent health and general well-being. Overall, the picture that emerges is one of a young population initiated into sex under very unsafe circumstances and with little or no information to address the fallouts. These include teenage pregnancy, teenage fatherhood/motherhood, dropping out of school, and sexually transmitted diseases. Bibliogr., note, sum.
