Abstract: | Can prospects for improving livelihood security and building sustainable environments in Africa be increased if women have greater influence in decisons about how to manage resources? This paper explores this question through an analysis of five cases from Kenya, Nigeria, Malawi, The Gambia and Rwanda culled from an extensive literature search across Africa. Each case offers specific insights for understanding the complexities, issues, outcomes and explanatory variables in regard to the roles of women in decisions related to resource management projects. The analysis of these cases clarifies ways in which gender shapes the opportunities and constraints African men and women face in securing viable livelihoods and strong community institutions across cultural, political, economic and ecological settings. It further identifies both the conditions under which women can more effectively manage land and other resources and the ways in which women are crucial contributors to community livelihoods and adept resource managers. The paper is based on data gathered in 1995 and 1996. Bibliogr., notes, ref., sum. |
