Abstract: | Africa today is a continent at the crossroads, with the intense reality of poverty, economic failure, disease, and most importantly perhaps, political instability and civil war characterizing too many countries. Nearly one-third of the continent is convulsed by war. This essay focuses on the collapse of the State in Sierra Leone, manifested in a civil war that is an example of the worst type of conflict. It describes this conflict in the context of recent history and development, isolates the factors that produced a fertile ground for rebellion, and more importantly, examines the many peace initiatives and how they were botched in spite of the great efforts and sacrifices on the part of all concerned - with the exception of the rebel movement, the Revolutionary United Front (RUF), itself.
