Abstract: | The labour market in Southern Rhodesia was used by colonial regimes to pursue policies of racial discrimination. In contrast, the postindependence government in Zimbabwe used the labour market to try and achieve equitable income distribution and alleviate poverty. The author discusses the evolution of labour policy in Zimbabwe since independence, focusing on the structure and development of both the formal and informal labour markets, the incidence of unemployment, wage developments, and industrial relations.
