Abstract: | Their is a lack of serious critical attention for the works of young Nigerian writers. Even when attention is paid at all, it is usually to deride and to reveal their imperfections. The present author focuses in particular on criticism of the young Nigerian playwright Esiaba Irobi. He argues that to comprehend any work of art is, to a great extent, to understand the author and his world. A short description of Irobi's life and a synopsis of two of his plays: 'Nwokedi' and 'Hangmen also die' show that the plays are meaningful, significant and purposeful if read and analysed within the context of men and events that inform their composition.
