Abstract: | The manufacturing sector is the second largest contributor to formal employment in South Africa, but there has been a drop in the number of people employed in this sector. The government is thus turning to local economic development (LED) strategies in an attempt to promote job creation and boost exports. In the development of economies, industrialization is sometimes regarded as a panacea. However, it is also important in approaching industrial development at a local level to encourage the integration of different institutional stakeholders, and to ensure that the appropriate mix of tools and mechanisms is used. In terms of government's plans to stimulate industrial development in the Eastern Cape, industrial development zones (IDZ) are being developed. This article focuses on Port Elizabeth-Uitenhage, where prospects for economic growth depend heavily on the Coega IDZ. Ref. |
