Abstract: | This article looks at how ICTs (Information and Communication Technologies) can be used to contribute to change in Africa. In particular, it looks at the role of Internet and wireless technologies in the solution of some of Africa's information and communication problems. The number of Internet users continues to increase throughout Africa, even though at a much slower rate than in the world at large. The significance of producing locally relevant Web content is now being realized and projects are under way in a number of countries which are geared towards using Web sites to disseminate information to people at the grassroots level. The article pays special attention to the case of Zambia and Zimbabwe, where the author carried out field studies between July and December 2000 which would lead to the building of a prototype Web information gateway in the agricultural sector.
