Abstract:To gauge the views of trade unionists on the issue of economic globalization, surveys were conducted among the international trade union leaders who attended three important union events in South Africa in late 1999 and early 2000. The majority of respondents associated economic globalization with the international consolidation of capitalism. The overwhelming majority of trade unionists said economic globalization was being debated in their unions. Fifty-two percent of the respondents felt that existing unions will have to be restructured if they are to be effective in organizing vulnerable workers. The union representatives were divided on the issue of whether or not economic globalization offered any opportunities. More than two-thirds of the respondents said that their unions had developed organizing strategies in response to the issue. The views of delegates from South Africa are set off against the international view. Sum. (p. 8).
