Abstract: | Workplace behaviour is activated by various motivating factors, both internal and external to the individual. External motivators include strategies introduced by an organisation to increase the effectiveness and productivity of employees. They include money and recognition. This article is based on research carried out in a wholesale company in Krugersdorp, Gauteng, South Africa. It shows that in view of the diversity among the employees resulting from different sociocultural frames of reference and the range of their activities, designing strategies that motivate everyone cannot be easy. Although the motivation intentions of the company were obviously well-intended and had numerous benefits for employees, problems were identified regarding their implementation and acceptance by employees. However, the research also revealed mitigating factors which counteracted the implications of demotivation: a strong identification with the objectives of the company among employees, both black and white, as well as a high sense of responsibility among all categories of employees.
