Abstract: | The history of teacher education in Nigeria dates back to the coming of the Christian missions in 1842. The author traces the origins and development of teacher education in colonial Nigeria and subsequently, following Nigerian independence. Tertiary teacher education was popularized by the Ashby Commission of 1960 which recommended the institution of a Bachelor's degree in education in the emerging federal and state universities. Other aspects of developments in teacher education examined in the article include the upgrading of some of the Colleges of Education to degree-granting institutions; the establishment of Federal Colleges of Education; the establishment of the National Commission for Colleges of Education; planning and administration of teacher education; problems of teacher education; professionalization of teaching; teaching practice; curriculum development in teacher education; and the training and status of the teachers of tomorrow.
