Abstract: | This paper discusses the attempts made by the Chichewa Board to prescribe the correct usage of Chichewa and to standardize its orthography. Chichewa is the national language of Malawi but it is also spoken in Zambia, Zimbabwe, and Mozambique, where it is known as Chinyanja. The paper examines the dominant role played by Dr. Hastings Kamuzu Banda, Malawi's first president and founder of the Chichewa Board, in its affairs. The strategies that the Board employed to ensure standardization are discussed. Finally the Board's achievements are assessed. Bibliogr., notes, ref., sum. |
